Lyke Wake Walk
The Lyke Wake Walk: Ravenscar to Osmotherley – 40 miles, 3 days
Since ages past, this pilgrimage has linked together the bronze age tumuli (burial mounds) on the high watershed of the moors. This was a route for coffin-bearers, and the ghosts of the dead allegedly sang via the whistling mists that floated along with the coffins.
When the walk first started the route was a major test of endurance, with no footpaths, pure navigation and moorcraft, knee deep heather and little idea of what lay ahead.
Nowadays, it can be done at any time during the year at any pace, or very fast, during the Lyke Wake Race in July each year.
Low-cost hostels along route – Robin Hood’s Bay, Boggle Hole YHA, Fryup, Glaisdale, Cote Ghyll Mill and across region.

Pilgrimage by foot is connected with places and landscape, and how those places make you feel. Read about holy places.
At the British Pilgrimage Trust, we believe a pilgrimage should be made on an individual’s own terms. We are founded on the principle that we can all bring our own beliefs to the journey, accessible and welcoming to all.
