Mills & Martyrs

Our Mills and Martyrs pilgrimage is a wonderful way to discover the hidden history of this part of the beautiful Peak District
We circle the Benefice from the Mother Church around her four Daughter Churches. Together we discover the forgotten stories of these fascinating buildings, from the head of Glossop’s almost-saint to Litton Mill’s cruelly-treated orphans buried in the churchyard ‘young, poor, easily replaced and anonymous’, one of whom inspired Charles Dickens’ to write Oliver Twist.
Through lead mining villages, around lead mining villages and by rivers through limestone dales and kilns we go, learning about nature and each other.
We say farewell to our journey companions and depart revived and restored with some special pilgrim practices to bring peace and comfort into our everyday lives.
