Caerphilly Castle
Caerphilly CF83 1WF

Massively defended concentric castle, started by Gilbert de Clare in 1268
In fact, Caerphilly is the first of the great concentric castles -this is where Edward I got the idea for Caernarfon, Conwy and Beaumaris. Gilbert de Clare was Marcher Lord of Glamorgan. He started the castle in 1268 to keep the rebellious Welsh to the north under control. It has complicated moats and defensive walls with towers and gatehouses. Inside was a Great Hall and other accommodation for the lord and his household.
The castle is now looked after by Cadw. More on their website at . Also lots more detail and excellent photos at Castle Wales website.
Refurbishment
Cadw has just undertaken a major £8m regeneration project at Caerphilly Castle to enhance its appeal as a world-class visitor attraction. The project included refurbishment of the Great Hall, construction of a wildflower garden, new interpretation materials, and accessibility improvements. Additionally, a new sustainably built Welcome Centre, a refurbished Cadw shop, and a children's play area have been added.
