The Hospital of St Cross, the oldest charitable institution in England, and home of the Wayfarer’s Dole, where for the past 900 years bread and ale have been offered to anyone, especially a pilgrim, who has asked. Perhaps lunch there too in their community-run Hall. This all takes care of food for the body, but to nourish your soul further, step into the majesty of the Hospital Church itself, with its metre-thick stone walls and miniature grandeur that mysteriously opens your spirit. Lie on the floor in the middle of the crossing and feel the result of all that sacred geometry in the architecture.

Britain’s Pilgrim Places

This listing is an extract from Britain’s Pilgrim Places, written by Nick Mayhew-Smith and Guy Hayward and featuring hundreds of similar spiritually charged sites and landscapes from across Britain.

Proceeds from sale of the book directly support the British Pilgrimage Trust, a non-profit UK charity. Thank you.

England’s Oldest Almshouse

Founded in the 1130s by Bishop Henry of Blois, St Cross is often said to be the oldest charitable almshouse in continuous use in England, a living tradition of shelter and welcome that has endured for nearly nine centuries.

A Haven for Travellers

From its earliest days, St Cross offered hospitality to wayfarers on the road to Winchester. That spirit survives in the Wayfarer’s Dole; a beaker of ale and a small morsel of bread still given freely to pilgrims who ask at the porter’s gate.

A “Miniature Cathedral”

The church at St Cross, with its soaring Early English lines and cool, pale stone, has long been admired as a small yet perfect example of medieval sacred architecture, a place where quietness seems to rise like incense.

Two Orders of Brothers

St Cross is home to two communities: the Order of the Hospital of St Cross, founded in the 12th century, and the Order of Noble Poverty, established in the 15th. Both continue their gentle rhythm of daily life within the precinct.

Architecture Shaped by Charity

The quadrangle, almshouses, and medieval hall were designed for care, simplicity, and communal living. Their calm proportions create a sense of refuge; a reminder that kindness, too, can be built in stone.

A Landscape of Stillness

Set beside the water meadows of the Itchen, the hospital grounds offer a rare blend of monastic quiet and natural beauty. For pilgrims, it is a place to pause, breathe, and set intention before walking onward to the heart of Winchester.
