Nine Stones Close Stone Circle, Elton
Harthill, Matlock DE45 1LL

Nine Stones Close stands on Harthill Moor in the Derbyshire Peak District — a Bronze Age stone circle known locally as the Grey Ladies
Set on the edge of a grassy field above the heather moor, the surviving standing stones command wide views across the Derbyshire uplands, the tallest rising to around two metres. Despite the name, the original circle was likely larger; what remains is no less striking for it. According to legend recorded in the book Magical Britain, the Grey Ladies come alive at midnight and dance across the moors — one of many such tales of petrified dancers found at stone circles across Britain.
The circle sits close to both the Peak District Old Stones Way and the Peak Wesley Way, making it a natural waypoint for pilgrims walking through this ancient landscape. Nine Stones Close is a scheduled ancient monument.
