St Andrew's Church, Alfriston
The Tye, Alfriston, Polegate BN26 5TL

Known as the Cathedral of the South Downs — a medieval church in Alfriston, East Sussex
St Andrew's rises from a circular ancient mound at the heart of Alfriston village — a fourteenth-century flint church so grand for its setting that it earned the name 'the Cathedral of the South Downs.'
The legend of the mound
The mound beneath it is thought to be of pre-Christian origin, and legend has it that when the medieval builders tried to lay their foundations elsewhere in the village, the stones were moved to the mound each night. Not knowing whether this was the work of God or the Devil, they built where the stones kept returning.
Sanctuary accommodationg the Cuckmere Pilgrim Path
The church sits on the Cuckmere Pilgrim Path, a twelve-mile route through the valley, and the Old Chapel Centre nearby offers Sanctuary accommodation for pilgrims passing through.
