An ancient village with nine wells
Llangeler is the old parish of Dre-fach and Felindre with a circular churchyard - which suggests a very old settlement. There were also known to be nine wells around the village although they have all now disappeared with the exeption of St Geler's Well which is on private land outside the property, Plas Geler. According to the megalithic website (see reference under More Information below), this well was used by the 7th Century St Geler who was said to live as a hermit close to the spring.
According to Francis Jones in his book The Holy Wells of Wales, there was a small chapel by the well which was 'visited by such a concourse of people that no fair in Wales can equal it in multitude'. After bathing (and frequently leaving their crutches behind in a statement of hope) the sick would lay on a particular llech (stone) in the churchyard and if they slept, a cure was certain but otherwise not. There are no remains of the chapel but the spring is apparently still apparent.
There was also a particularly good time to visit for a cure which was between 21st June (St Peter's Day) and the 29th June (St Geler's Day) when the heavens shone in the favour of the infirm.
