Stonehenge

Stonehenge stands as one of the world’s most iconic and mysterious prehistoric monuments—a sacred stone circle rising from Salisbury Plain, built over 4,500 years ago.

Its massive sarsen stones and inner bluestones were arranged with extraordinary precision to align with the movements of the sun, particularly the summer and winter solstices, suggesting its central role in ancient spiritual life.

More than a marvel of engineering, Stonehenge is part of a wider ritual landscape that includes the Avenue, Durrington Walls, and the Cursus—evidence of processional routes and ceremonial use. It is a place where earth, sky, and human intention have met for millennia.

Though now partially enclosed, Stonehenge remains a powerful focus for spiritual journeying. From time to time, the British Pilgrimage Trust leads guided pilgrimages that approach the stones through the surrounding ancient landscape, reconnecting with the deeper experience of arrival, reverence, and return.

Pilgrims walk in the footsteps of ancestors who once gathered here to mark seasonal cycles, honour the dead, and seek communion with the cosmos. Along the way, we encounter Bronze Age barrows, ancient pathways, and wide skies that invite contemplation and awe.

Stonehenge is not only a monument of the past, but a living symbol of continuity and mystery. To approach it as a pilgrim is to honour its sacred story—and to find yourself part of it.
