King's Lynn Pilgrim Trail - 2.8 miles, 0.5 day

Follow in the footsteps of pilgrim and mystic Margery Kempe

Explore the haunts of Margery Kempe, a remarkable visionary and mystic who lived in King’s Lynn in the fifteenth century and went on incredible pilgrim journeys: including to Santiago, Rome and Jerusalem, the three most significant shrines in the Christian World.

These were hugely challenging journeys for a woman to undertake at the time.

Highlights along the Route

This trail takes in a string of fascination pilgrim locations including:

Possible representation of Margery Kempe

King’s Lynn Minster, where the carved head of a woman on a pew end may be a representation of Margery Kempe; King's Lynn Museum, with its collection of pilgrim badges dredged from the river; the Shrine to Our Lady of Walsingham at the town's Catholic church; and Red Mount Chapel - a replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem - which pilgrims visited before setting off for Walsingham.

Discover holy places, and bring your own beliefs.

Pilgrimage by foot is connected with places and landscape, and how those places make you feel. Read about holy places.

At the British Pilgrimage Trust, we believe a pilgrimage should be made on an individual’s own terms. We are founded on the principle that we can all bring our own beliefs to the journey, accessible and welcoming to all.
