Newcastle Pilgrimage in a Day – 1 day, 3-9 miles
Circular route
The Google Map’s yellow/orange circular 9-mile route was created by Clare MacLaren. It’s in two parts, marked each by yellow and orange, to/from the Ilford Road Metro Station. Each part can be walked as a single section in either direction, or the circular route starting from anywhere, but preferably ending at the Cathedral for maximum narrative climax. The entire route is wheelchair friendly and offers step-free access. For more detail, click on each individual waypoint on the Google Map.
Linear route
The Google Map ‘burgundy’ linear 3-mile route from St Mary’s, Jesmond to Newcastle Cathedral was created by David Pott, as part of his Northern Saints Trails project.

Discover holy places, and bring your own beliefs.
Pilgrimage by foot is connected with places and landscape, and how those places make you feel. Read about holy places.
At the British Pilgrimage Trust, we believe a pilgrimage should be made on an individual’s own terms. We are founded on the principle that we can all bring our own beliefs to the journey, accessible and welcoming to all.
