Portsmouth Cathedral Pilgrimage in a Day
Southeast England & London

Portsmouth Cathedral pilgrimage in a day - 11 miles, 1 day
Porchester Castle
The route begins in the grounds of Porchester Castle, managed by English Heritage. The Romans built a large fort here in the third century AD. It then became a Saxon settlement and a Norman castle after 1066. It was an important point to embark across the channel for medieval knights. And while you can't use them yourself as a pit stop, you'll even see a row of Roman toilets along the walls here, built into the Roman wall.
St Mary's Church, Portchester
St Mary's Church is also at the start of the route, and is notable for being built within the walls of the Roman fort. The church was founded by William de Pont de l’Arche by 1128, and has an interesting history.
Portsmouth Cathedral
This one-day pilgrimage route ends at Portsmouth Cathedral, once a medieval church and remains dedicated to St Thomas Becket. St Thomas Becket certainly left his mark on southern England, a legacy put to productive use in the city of Portsmouth when it converted a medieval church to cathedral status in 1927.
