Walpole St Peter to King's Lynn - 11.4 miles, 1 day
A route with a rich pilgrimage heritage
The little Norfolk village of Walpole St Peter has a unique place in the history of pilgrimage. It was the birthplace of Godric, the first English layperson to journey to Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago, which he did in the year 1102. Godric later abandoned the sea and became a hermit at Finchale, near Durham.

Walpole St Peter was also significant for medieval pilgrims walking to Walsingham. The ‘Wal’ part of the village name indicates that it lay on a defensive wall, also known as Sea Bank, which provided the safest route for pilgrims coming from the North and Midlands on their way to a ferry that would take them to across the River Great Ouse to King's Lynn.
