St Michael and All Angels Church, Ewyas Harold
12 Priorsfield, Ewyas Harold, Hereford HR2 0TX
Pilgrims can sleep in the nave of the church, and make use of the essential facilities of the church hall next door. The church is a short walking distance from the village shop and places to eat, including a Fish & Chip Shop. Try local beer and food in The Temple Bar Inn (01981 240423) or The Dog Inn (01981 240598).
The church dates from the 13th century, and has magnificent stained glass windows. The massive 13th century tower may have once been detached from the church and it is likely that it gave protection from raiders. It houses six bells, which are rung weekly. Find an early 14th-century effigy in the chancel, 16th-century carvings from Flanders and a medieval cross base and shaft in the graveyard.
The village is on the site of Ewyas Harold Castle, of which only the motte remains. Its name derives from the Welsh kingdom of Ewyas and from Harold, son of Ralph the Timid (Earl of Hereford), and grandson of King Æthelred the Unready. Ewyas Harold parish has a large area of common land rich in wildlife and ancient meadow saffron, a leftover from cultivation by the monks at Dore Abbey. Some villagers still have commoner's rights.
